National account managers are responsible for keeping and maintaining client records, and making sure they stay profitable. They talk to current and potential customers, update client profiles, and generally keep their accounts going. While many of them are advertising jobs, account managers can work in several other industries and can come from different professional backgrounds. It is largely an office job with minimal travel involved, and most positions are full-time. Besides ad agencies, common employers include PR firms, outsourcing companies, and media outfits such as newspapers and TV stations.

The average pay for national account manager jobs is AU$79,000 per year. The salary range is from $56,000 to $202,000, and those with more experience or qualifications have a higher chance of promotion.

Job description

National account managers aim to bring in business revenue by increasing public presence and seeking out new clients. A lot of office work is involved, so this is a job for those who can multitask and thrive in a hectic office environment. Your responsibilities may include:

  • Promoting opportunities for sponsorship and generating publicity for the client/project
  • Managing and updating a portfolio of key clients and/or major advertisers
  • Handling the production and sales teams
  • Coordinating with the production department to ensure timely completion of projects and project deliverables
  • Providing updates on client status and progress on various projects
  • Generating regular reports on client accounts, usually with the finance and accounting departments

Qualifications

Most national account manager jobs require a bachelor degree. Media and advertising degrees are considered, but a background in business or accounting will really help your chances. These are rarely entry-level positions, so you'll need at least a year of relevant experience. Other useful skills include:

  • Written and oral communication
  • Basic office applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets
  • Multi-tasking and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well individually and with a team
