      CAD Drafter Jobs

      Computer-aided design, or CAD, refers to a two or three-dimensional design created using computer software such as AutoCAD. Such designs allow designers to take a look at minute details in the design, as well as the overall design as a whole. The ability to use layering, zooming, and rotation effects to observe and analyze the design is one of the major advantages to computer-aided designs. Some of the industries that make use of computer-aided design include construction, automobile, aerospace, and interior design. In fact, almost any physical object, from those in fashion design to medicine, can be designed with the use of CAD software.

      CAD Drafters in Construction

      Architects and engineers make extensive use of computer-aided designs in order to create blueprints, diagrams, and samples that can be used for reference by all construction workers. CAD drafters are responsible for making design drafts depending on specifications given by clients, contractors, or superiors. Drafters are in constant communication with project leaders, co-workers, and customers in order to make sure that the design meets their standards, vision, and requirements.

      Common tasks of CAD drafters in building construction:

      • Make rough sketches for conceptualization
      • Create computer-aided designs with multiple views and levels
      • On-site visits to assure that the progress of construction meets the design standards
      • Make adjustments to the design depending on construction, architecture, and engineering issues
      • May need experience in mechanical, electrical, or plumbing systems to incorporate into designs

      Becoming a CAD Drafter


      Companies looking to hire CAD drafters usually require at least a high school diploma. College courses, training courses, and specialized studies on related topics are required for high-end CAD drafter jobs. Communication skills are a must for designers in order to discuss and report on conceptualization, design, and construction with superiors, clients, and co-workers. What employers seek most is experience with CAD software depending on the industry being applied for. CAD drafters are paid depending on qualification, experience, and the project size.
