Computer-aided designs are commonly used in the production of plans, layouts, and drafts for various industries. Construction designs for buildings, for instance, are often created by architects and engineers. One important job that has to do with computer-aided design is the position of CAD operator. CAD operators are responsible for highly technical, and complex designs that consider engineering, mechanical, electrical and other specifications.

CAD Operators in Building Construction
With regards to building construction, CAD operators have to be familiar with high-rise construction materials such as concrete and steel. Some of the buildings that CAD operators might work on include condominiums, office buildings, industrial buildings, and parking structures. With the use of computer software, CAD operators are expected to create designs, alter drafts, and provide information based on design analysis. Softwares that these professionals must be familiar with include AutoCAD, Microstation, Adobe software, and other designing software.

Common tasks of CAD operators working on buildings include:
  • Analysis, revision, and explication of drafting designs
  • Advise, guide, and supervise drafters and other subordinates in the design team
  • Produce and impose set standards regarding drafting designs
  • Analysis of engineering and architecture designs and specifications
  • Production of general engineering designs
  • Communicate with clients, customers, and co-workers regarding designs and specifications
  • CAD designers are also expected to know and follow building and design regulations and laws
How to Become a CAD Operator
Since CAD software is highly technical and possesses great potential for design, applicants must be thoroughly familiar with such programs. College education is often a must, since employers seek applicants who have specialized or trained in relevant fields such as engineering. Because CAD has a wide number of applications, it is important to employers that CAD designers looking to go into building construction have relevant experience. Communication, teamwork, and supervision skills are a must in order to excel in this field of work. Compensation is based on experience, qualification, and job description.
