Computer-aided design (CAD) technicians work on either two or three-dimensional designs of mechanical, electronic, piping, or structural products and components. Industries that require computer-aided designs include medicine, construction, manufacturing, architecture, and engineering. The designs that CAD technicians create aid in the planning and execution of construction or manufacturing.

What Do CAD Technicians Do?CAD technician who work on building constructions, are responsible for making a computer-aided design according to the specifications of an architect or engineer. As opposed to CAD operators and drafters who work on specific jobs, CAD technicians usually work on a particular segment of a number of different construction projects. Experience and knowledge of structural engineering is important since these technicians work closely with engineers and project managers by assisting them in the design process.

Other common tasks of CAD technicians who work on buildings include the following:
  • Working on several projects at a time
  • Managing time properly to the schedules of multiple projects
  • Instruct other CAD technicians and co-workers when needed
  • Understand and follow specifications, concepts, and designs created by design engineers
  • Ensure that designs meet company, client, and contractor standards
  • On-site work including inspection, measurement, and surveys
  • Adjustment or revision of designs based on on-site inspections
Becoming a CAD Technician
Since building construction usually occurs on a large and complex scale, employers often seek applicants who are qualified and experienced for the job. Applicants are usually required to have an Associates Degree or other educational attainments relevant to engineering or construction. This is because CAD technicians often have to understand, calculate, and estimate engineering specifications. Good technical skills in drawing and design are needed to meet the standards of employers. Communication and teamwork skills are needed since CAD technicians usually work side-by-side on different segments of a project. Compensation is widely varied depending on the type of projects being worked on, as well as qualification and experience.
