The main duty of a contracts manager is to oversee processes, procedures, and finalization of contracts and contract agreements. This means that this position is responsible for negotiating terms and upholding policies that assure contact efficiency for the benefit of the project at hand. The contract manager is able to do so through constant review of contracts, meetings with other managers and directors, and revision of contracts.

Common Tasks Performed by Contracts ManagersConstruction and building jobs are some of the most common fields for contracts managers to work in. These professionals manage all aspects of contracts from planning and negotiation to finalization and implementation. This means that contracts managers have to keep a close track of schedules, agreements, and commitments to ensure that company standards and proper legislation are upheld. Other common tasks that are performed by contracts managers include the following:

  • Maintain relationships with clients and sub-contractors
  • Estimates and plans project costs and deadlines
  • Work closely with directors, lawyers, and other managers to maintain standards and policies regarding contracts
  • Maintain regulations regarding safety and health
  • Inspect situations, procedures, and processes to determine risk factors and other issues that may affect contractual information
  • Problem solve and negotiate issues to ensure efficiency and uphold standards of operation
  • Creates and presents reports regarding contract work to properly inform co-workers, clients, or sub-contractors
Becoming a Contracts ManagerThis profession is known as a higher education job. Employers seeking contracts managers often prefer applicants who have a degree in a related discipline. For those who do not have a degree, an experience equivalent is required. Computer skills are a must for creating contracts, reports, and presentations regarding contract work. Oral and written communication skills are needed to be successful in teamwork, negotiations, and dissemination of information to all parties involved in the contract. Organizational, management, and supervision skills are required to become successful at this job. Contracts managers are paid depending on their experience, qualification, and the project they are asked to handle.
