Crane Operator Jobs

Cranes are often used in places like railway yards, construction sites, industrial sites, shipyards, or manufacturing plants. Used for the lifting and movement of heavy objects and materials, cranes are essential for the completion of tasks that manpower and small equipment cannot perform. Crane operators take control of the levers and pedals of the crane to lift, move, or unload heavy objects with the crane.

What to Expect as a Crane Operator

As part of a building job, crane operators can expect to work in tower cranes or overhead cranes. These professionals are required to work in the confined space of a crane cab at towering heights (especially operators working on building jobs). Aside from this, operators sometimes have to work in differing weather conditions in order to meet construction deadlines. Some common tasks that crane operators have to do include the following:

• Inspection and testing of the crane to make sure it is working safely and properly
• Maintain the good working order of the crane through careful operation
• Work well within safety regulations and time schedules to assure maximum quality and efficiency
• Understand and follow instructions, specifications, layouts, processes and procedures that go into construction
• Good knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of the crane
• Work closely with a co-worker who will guide movements through hand signals

What is Expected of a Crane Operator

With regards to education, most employers require a high school education or less. Experience is of more importance to this position since it takes time to get accustomed to driving and operating a crane. Good literacy and numeracy skills are still needed in order to perform well in this profession. Good eyesight is needed in order to see the site, materials, equipment, people, obstacles, and other objects. Dexterity is needed for precision and accuracy when operating the crane. Crane operators are compensated depending on their experience, qualification, and project details.
