Dogman jobs can be found in any place that requires the operation of a crane. This includes construction, demolition, and cargo loading/unloading sites. The dogman is responsible for guiding the crane driver with the use of hand signals, whistles, and other forms of quick communication. Positioned at the base of the crane, the dogman works in a hazardous area, therefore he or she should be highly alert and aware.
The dogman works in tight partnership with the crane operator. Every task performed by the crane is guided by the dogman, who usually has a better view of the site, materials, and obstacles that the crane has to work with. When the crane picks up materials or equipment, the dogman is responsible for inspecting to make sure that the load is secured.
These professionals have to make adjustments with the weights of each load to make sure that the load is balanced for transportation. The dogman also has to steady swaying or swiveling loads in order for the crane to perform duties safely. Aside from directing, guiding, and aiding the crane driver in his work, the dogman often has to do other on-site work such as movement of goods and materials, or any other labour work needed.
Most employers require less than high school educational attainment, since this is a job that is hands on, and does not require formal education. Still, communication, numeracy, and literacy skills are needed in order to follow instruction and work as a team with other construction workers. Strength and dexterity are needed to deal with heavy loads and materials. Most important to this job is a good awareness and alertness levels in order to anticipate and quickly react to possible danger.
