The construction and building industry is one that requires frequent transportation of goods and mobilization of equipment. As such, this is an industry which requires a number of drivers in order to keep production on schedule. Drivers in the construction industry have the responsibility of loading, transporting, and unloading various construction materials. Depending on the job at hand, these professionals may be required to handle different vehicles. Since construction schedules are often inflexible, it is important that drivers are able to work overtime shifts in varying weather conditions.
Drivers are responsible for the timely delivery of construction material, equipment, or even workers. Some of the vehicles that drivers have to drive include dump trucks, shuttles, delivery trucks, cement mixer trucks, riggers, and heavy equipment haulers. Construction materials are often delivered with the use of dump trucks and delivery trucks. Employees can be shuttled between construction sites with the use of a shuttle van. Heavy equipment haulers are used to transport equipment such as bulldozers and excavators.
Although driving jobs may differ, all drivers have a number of tasks that are common to all driving jobs. Loading and unloading materials and equipment is one of the primary tasks in this profession. Proper documentation of all delivered goods is also handled by the driver. These individuals will also have to deal with suppliers, construction directors, project managers, and other professionals in order to obtain instructions, report delivery/transportation status, and assure quality and efficiency.
Most companies require a high school education or less. Good literacy and numeracy skills are needed to complete his or her paperwork and other tasks. Proper licensing and awareness of driving rules and regulations is a must. Many employers refuse to hire drivers unless they have a clean driver's record and experience with driving for construction purposes. Applicants will need to be physically fit to performing loading, unloading, and minor maintenance on the truck. Compensation of this job differs depending on the kind of truck being driven, the load size and type, and the qualification and experience of the applicant.
