Floor Layer Jobs

Oftentimes overlooked, the floor completes the overall effect of a space or place such as bedroom, bathroom, or office. In building or construction business, floor laying or covering is usually the final touch in the process.

Floor layer jobs are another "indoors" building jobs that involve the laying and finishing of different flooring materials such as vinyl, linoleum, rubber, tiles and wood. As indoor jobs, floor layer jobs means that your workplace vary from small offices or bedrooms to wide spaces such as living rooms, reception halls, and foyer.

On the job

Floor layer jobs could range from the intricate laying laminate floorboards in houses, to fitting carpets and tiles in offices and shops.

Your job as floor layer depends on the size and shape of the rooms and the type of flooring materials that your client requires. Your tasks and responsibilities may include some or all of the following:

• measure floor space that you're going to work on
• provide client with cost estimates
• draw up plan and design for the the client's approval
• clear the work area of furniture
• remove old flooring to be replaced
• prepare the floor for the layering and finishing
• replace the furniture when the floor layering job is completed.
• As a floor layer, your main responsibility is ensuring that the client is happy with your workmanship.

What you need

Floor layering jobs are often done as a small team of two or three people. That's why it's important that you are able to work well in a group. You must also able to handle and operate hand and power tools. Good eye and hand coordination would also help. Knowledge in interior design would be an advantage.

Floor layer jobs usually require secondary education. Since clients will be expecting you to prepare, understand or act on drawings and site instructions, subjects such as English, maths , art, and design are desirable. A Trade Certificate or on-the-job training as an apprentice is also required. A licence to drive is also required since floor layer jobs require some travelling.

Money matters

Salaried floor layers wages vary depending on the skills, size of the project, and the company that one is working for. Some floor layers are self-employed and work on contractual basis.
