Forklift operator jobs are found in timber yards, waterfront, warehouses, building constructions and those industries that require a lot of lifting and moving of heavy loads.

What you need

There are no strict guidelines on the educational background for forklift operators, but employers prefer that you've had at least three years of secondary education. Basic English and maths though are required.

Forklift operators should have good driving skills. You should have a good grasp of the operation and limitations of a forklift. Ability to calculate distances, weights and volume is desirable. Knowledge of the fuel requirements of different forklifts would also help.

Forklift operator jobs need workers who have trained and are authorised to operate a forklift. Before you get hired to forklift operator jobs, you have to show documentary evidence that you have met the competency requirements for the jobs. If you're going to operate on the road or public space, a Class 1 driver's licence with a forklift endorsement is required. Operating a heavy forklift needs a Class 2 driver's licence with a forklift endorsement.

Money matters

Most forklift operators work in shifts and in hourly basis. Hourly wages vary depending on experience and skills. Some shifts may earn you a higher hourly rate.
