        Work-related accidents and health concerns could be properly addressed and arrested by professionals who have the right qualifications and trainings. That's why building and construction industry employ health & safety supervisors to do the job.

        People who are engaged in health & safety supervisor jobs in building and construction industry are responsible for supervising and monitoring health and safety risks and hazards on site. They ensure that building jobs workers comply with all applicable occupational health and safety regulations and standards.

        On the job

        Health & safety supervisors in building jobs are involved in various procedures to minimise or eliminate risks and hazards personnel on site are exposed to.

        They may perform some or all of the following tasks:

        • ensure that the project comply with health & safety guidelines
        • implement policies and procedures to assure awareness among personnel on site
        • supervise personnel engaged in monitoring and preventing chemical, biological and physical hazards
        • work with staff to manage and monitor health & safety standards in the workplace
        • guide personnel to ensure applicable health & safety standards are being enforced
        • develop and conduct basic environmental, health & safety training to employees
        • devise emergency procedures and trainings and coordinate emergency teams
        • serve as consultant to departments in matters related to environmental, health & safety.

        What you should have

        If you're looking at health & safety jobs, you must have tertiary qualification in occupational health/hygiene or health and safety management. A degree in Environmental or Safety engineering is highly favourable.

        Apart from the educational requirements, you must also establish in depth knowledge of health and safety legislation. You must demonstrate safety-consciousness and alertness. Knowledge of safety measures and equipment may be helpful. Knowledge and ability to address work-related illnesses and and injuries may be useful. You must also have good observational, communication and listening skills; good judgment calls may work to your advantage. Ability to utilise computer technology to access data and keep records is favourable.
