Inspectors in building industry examine the construction, repair or alteration of buildings to ensure compliance with building codes and ordinances, zoning regulations and contract specifications.

On the job

There are many types of inspectors in building jobs. Some inspectors jobs are the following:

  • Building inspectors check the structural quality and safety of the building.
  • Electrical inspectors examine the installation of electrical systems and equipment in the building. They make sure that the electrical systems and equipment are functioning well and comply with electrical codes and standards.
  • Elevator inspectors examine lifting and conveying structures like elevators.
  • Mechanical inspectors inspect the set up of mechanical components in various areas of the house or building.
  • Inspectors are tasked to perform some or all of the following duties and responsibilities:
  • assess building plans submitted for approval
  • provide advice and assistance to builders before building plans are finalised and lodged
  • inspect buildings during construction to ensure that proper materials and methods are used
  • make sure that construction of building conforms to building regulations of the area
  • write reports on building progress and keep the records of it.

What you should have

If you want to be an inspector, you must have the right blend of technical knowledge, experience and education.

Requirements for inspectors jobs vary depending upon the place of employment, but inspectors must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of construction materials and practises in general or specialised areas of building and construction.

Most employer require at least a secondary diploma even with experienced workers. More often, employers hire people who have studied engineering or architecture, or those who have a degree in building inspection, mathematics, construction technology and home inspection. Some employers may ask for certificates of qualifications.

You must also be in good physical condition if you plan to become an inspector. You must also have a driver's licence. You must also have knowledge of building codes and standards of the place where the project is located. You must keep abreast of the changes on standards and practises in the project location.

Salaries vary depending upon the employment location, level of skills and competency, and experience.
