Interior decorator jobs are types of jobs that are involved in making aesthetic improvements to a space, place or room.

On the job

Interior decorators assist clients in coordinating the decorative aspects of interior spaces. Interior decorators decorate hotels, restaurants, office buildings and residences. They may be asked to decorate new spaces or redecorate existing spaces.

Building jobs like interior decorator jobs may involve some or all of the following tasks:

• consult and advice clients on the the selection of colour and fabric schemes, furniture, lighting fixtures, walls and floor coverings and other accessories
• provide sketch designs, cost estimates for the client's approval
• supervise the purchase of materials
• supervise and coordinate delivery, installation and arrangement of fixtures and furnishings

What you should have

Unlike interior designers who are licenced professionals who coordinate projects that may involve architecture and construction, interior decorators' jobs are limited to artistically tasteful improvements.

Education and training requirements for building jobs such as interior decorators vary depending upon the location of employment. Some employers tend to hire people with interior decorating experience. You could gain experience by working as assistant decorator. Taking short courses in painting and decorating could increase your chance of landing the job.

As an interior decorator aspirant, you must demonstrate creativity. A portfolio of your work may help the client decide to get your services. You should have a good understanding of colours and colour combination schemes. Awareness and understanding of fashion and design trends may be helpful. Excellent communication and presentation skills may be useful.

Money matters

Interior decorators' salary vary depending on the level of skills and competency, experience, employment location, occupational growth and size of the company one is working for. Some interior decorator jobs are on commission basis. Experienced interior decorators who have an extensive list of clients work on freelance.
