The right blend of creativity, artistry and education can land you interior design jobs.

Interior designer jobs are those that involve designing and supervising the construction or redevelopment of offices, shops, buildings and rooms. Interior designer jobs must not be confused with interior decorator jobs. Whereas interior decorator jobs are focused on choosing color schemes and complementary furnishings and accessories, interior designer jobs are attuned to architectural detailing which includes floor plans, renovations, and constructions.

On the jobInterior designer jobs are available in interior design firms, building and construction industry, architectural firms and design departments of big companies. Some interior designers specialise in restaurants, homes, hotels, stage sets, and interior of ships or aeroplanes.

Interior designers may perform some or all of the following tasks:
  • discuss with client and architect the specifications of the projects
  • plan, develop, and execute designs that are functional and aesthetically appealing for client's approval
  • present working drawings and specifications to client
  • give the client the estimated cost of the project
  • keep abreast of legal requirements in interior design and administer tenders and contract documents
  • organise supplies and prepare instructions to contractors involved in the project
maintain time, cost and quality control
  • work with specialists in technical areas such as electrical and structural design, fire, hydraulics and lighting
  • constant monitoring and inspection of the progress of the project
  • manage schedule to meet the deadline set
  • redesign the interiors of old buildings and offices
  • design furnishings as instructed by the client.
What you should haveIf you want to land interior designer jobs, you must have a degree or diploma in interior design. An industrial design or architecture qualification could also help you get a job in interior design. An apprenticeship or on-the-job training is an advantage. If you're just starting your career, you may opt to get temporary building jobs in construction and building businesses.

Building jobs such as interior designer jobs need people who have creative and artistic flair. Salaried interior designers often work as part of a team, that's why it's important that you are a good team player. You must also demonstrate skills in drawing, illustration and design. Good communication and presentation skills could work at your advantage.
