One thing you should know about working in building industry is that you don't have be an engineer or an architect to work in building jobs. There are many other jobs that are equally challenging that you should consider.

Carpenters/Joiners

Carpenters always get in the picture when it comes to building jobs. Carpenters or joiners build, repair and install structures according to the instructions of the engineer or architect. Your skills as a carpenter may extend across wide range of carpentry jobs or you could specialise in one or two.

Welders

Other jobs in building industry include welder jobs. Welders cut, shape and join parts for machinery and equipment. They study the blueprint, plans, or drawings provided by an engineer, and construct objects according to specifications. They cut steel and metal parts to be joined and weld these parts together.

Stonemason

If you fancy yourself as Hercules, then maybe you can try other jobs in building industry like stonemason. Stonemasons' work is specialised; you'd be tasked to carve architectural features, cut and shape blocks of rocks, or lay down stonework into place in on-site projects.

What you should have

There are no specific requirements to become a carpenter/joiner, welder or stonemason, but many employers prefer that you have at least three years of secondary education.

You must have the required skills for the other jobs in building industry that you want to get into. You must be able to follow instructions accurately. Your ability to interpret drawings, designs, and blueprints could work to your advantage. You must also be adept in operating machines and hand tools.

Other jobs require that you have keen eye for details. you must also hand good hand-eye coordination. Good communication skills are also desirable.

Since most of building jobs are outdoor jobs, you must also be physically fit and conscious of safety measures on-site.

Salaries vary according to specialisation, skill level, experience, employer, and location of employment.
