Dry wall plasterer, interior plasterer, and plasterboard fixer and stopper, cement plasterer, solid plasterer or texture plasterer - whatever names you may call them, plasterer jobs all involve mixing and applying different kinds of plasters in interior or exterior walls, ceilings, and floors before they are painted or decorated.
Exterior plasterers specialise in application of cement-based or modified plaster to ceilings, floors and the outside and inside walls of buildings. Interior plasterers, on the other hand, plaster joints in walls or ceilings.
There are three common types of plastering jobs: solid plastering, fibrous plastering, and dry lining.
Solid plastering involve the application of wet finishes to surfaces and putting of protective coverings on external walls.
Fibrous plastering entail creating decorative plasterworks using a mixture of plaster and fibres shaped with casts and moulds.
Dry lining involves fastening together plasterboard or wallboard partitions on a timber or metal frame.
There are no requirements set for plasterer jobs, but you must have at least three years of secondary education. Most employers want to employ those who have on-site experience. If you have no experience as plasterer in building jobs, you might want to consider to work as plasterer assistant or labourer to gain site experience.
You must also have broad knowledge of the different plastering materials and techniques. Knowledge of building rules and regulations on plastering jobs is useful. Your skills in interpreting plans and ability to follow instructions may be helpful. Like most building jobs, plaster jobs require that you're physically fit and healthy. You must also have good hand and eye coordination, strong back and arms.
Salaries vary depending on employer, employment location, experience and skills. Self-employed plasterers may earn more than salaried plasterers.
