Programmer jobs are not solely confined to information technology (IT); they are also available in building industry. Programmer jobs in building industry, however, have different requirements and functions.

Programming in building jobs involve the thorough, systematic and organised evaluation of the interrelated priorities, goals, facts and needs of the client, labourers, facility users, and the community. A well-planned programme leads to an efficient and effective project planning.

On the job

Programmer jobs require those who are employed in them to perform some or all of the following tasks and functions:

  • generate project programmes and schedules
  • supervise planning functions from deign up to construction stages
  • prepare and control of project programmes and spreadsheet across different project-related activities
  • coordinate the needs of the operational managers and suppliers into a master programme
  • produce databases for management and control of all programme schedule
  • maintain and update project programmes
  • prepare project forecast report to be presented to the client
  • advise project managers on strategic planning of the project
  • regularly inspect work site
  • liaise with client, architects, engineers and contractors
  • oversee all ongoing projects
  • coordinate resource deployment to sites
  • manage the master project plan.

What you should have

Like other building jobs, there are no specific requirements for programmer jobs, however, employers prefer that you have an intensive experience in estimating or contract administration, preparation and control of project programmes, or in construction projects. Some employers prefer you to have a tertiary qualification in construction or engineering and project management.

Apart from the building jobs experience required for programmer jobs, you must also demonstrate proficiency in programming software like Primavera Project Planner or Microsoft Project. You must also have the ability to manage and customise planning tools according to the client's specifications and expectations. You must also be capable of controlling and monitoring project progress and client expectations.

Excellent and flexible written and verbal communications skills are required for the programmer jobs since you will be liaising with different groups of people.
