Roofs are the turf of roofers. Roofers repair, replace, or install roofs using a variety of roofing materials such as tiles, shingle, slates, steel sheeting, and butyl. Roofers also use roofing methods like slating or tiling, built-up felt roofing, leadwork, and thatching.

On the job

Roof jobs may require workers to perform some or all of the following functions:

  • study drawings, specification sheet and work sites to determine materials to be used
  • inspect roofs to determine the best repair procedure
  • provide material and labor cost estimate
  • make assessments of potential risks and hazards
  • build ladders, tile elevators, and scaffoldings
  • transport roofing materials atop the building or structure
  • attach roof to the structure
  • remove, repair or replace damaged materials from the roof
  • install spouting pipes
  • clean and maintain equipment and workplace.

Some roofers specialise on particular material used in roofing. There are membrane roofers, metal roofers, roof tiler, and shingle roofer.

On building jobs, roofers may work with other trades people like joiner and plumbers.

What you should have

There are no specific requirements to be a roofer, although maths, technical drawing, and woodwork subjects are useful. Some employers prefer that you have completed an apprenticeship programme. Experience in plumbing could work to your advantage. You must also have a driver's licence to qualify for the job.

To get roofer jobs in building industry, you must possess the following skills and attitude:

  • broad knowledge of different roofing materials and methods
  • roof construction and repair ability
  • ability to read and interpret building plans and drawings
  • knowledge of building codes and roofing codes
  • organizational skills
  • understanding of health and safety measures in workplace
  • ability to follow instructions precisely
  • comfortable working on high places
  • hand-eye coordination
  • keen eye for details.

Money matters

Roofers' salaries vary depending on the work involved, level of experience, employer, and location of employment. Some roofers are self-employed.
