Surveying jobs are the types of jobs involving the measurement of land and the assessment of geographic information for construction purposes. Your main duty as a surveyor is to study and evaluate an area that is being considered for urban development. Being the surveyor makes you responsible for determining whether a given area is perfect for the construction project or not.
Your tasks and responsibilities as a surveyor include the measurement of land areas, the determination of land boundaries, the compilation and evaluation of data, the interpretation of codes of practice, the study of natural and social environments, and the production of maps. Surveying jobs will also require you to make plans, charts, and reports based on your assessments of the land area. Your output will be the client's basis of whether to continue with the planned area development or not.You can choose to specialise in surveying. Engineering surveying involves surveying routes for canals, pipelines, railways, roads, sewers, and tunnels. It is used in the construction of dam sites, highways, and multistorey buildings. Mine surveying involves surveying passages for open-cut or underground mines.Geodetic surveying and remote sensing surveying involves locating positions and monitoring changes on the surface of the earth. Global positioning systems and star observations are used in geodetic surveying while airborne imagery systems and high-resolution satellites are used in remote sensing surveying.There are no specific academic qualifications for surveying jobs but most employers will require you to be a high school graduate first before they consider you for employment. If you still don't have any previous working experiences in surveying, an apprenticeship program is your best option. Apprenticeship programs in surveying takes only about three to four years to complete. Background in computer science, engineering, geography, geology, geometry, mathematics, physics, or trigonometry will be very beneficial.
