There are two ways to find work within the Education sector, that is either working for a State Government or a Privately run school. Many staff are involved in the running of Schools weather they be Government run or Privately run schools. Listed below are some Education jobs available to job seekers.
Teachers
Becoming a teacher can be rewarding for anybody who likes to teach or for people who like to work with children. To become a Teacher a University degree is now a necessity, this didn't used to be the case as teachers college used to be the gateway to get into teaching. There are many different positions for teachers available with the Education Department, full time teachers, part time teachers, contract teachers, temporary relieving teachers and Hourly paid Instructors.
When first applying for a full time position within the Government you must apply with the teachers registration board and generally full time permanent positions for new teachers are given in country areas. Unfortunately most teachers starting will have to take up a country appointment for a few years before applying for a position in a metropolitan location. There are certain benefits for Teachers who are appointed into remote areas such as mileage allowance.
Certain states have other benefits such as Country incentive leave but check your local government websites for benefits in your state. Salaries vary greatly from state to state but an estimate starting salary for a teacher is about $40,000 and after gaining experience go up to $60,000+. The salary can again improve if a teacher is employed as a Co-ordinator, Assistant Principal or Principal.
Ancillary Staff
These people are essential to the running of any school, the people who man the front office and take care of paperwork. There are different classification levels for these employees depending on duties performed within the school. Positions include part time, full time, temporary and casual. Generally working times are between the hours of 9-5 but can be more flexible depending on the school. Salaries can vary greatly depending on experience and duties performed.
Groundsman
A Groundsman is in charge of any maintenance issues and taking care of the school grounds such as mowing the lawn. Groundsmen can be employed on a part time, full time, casual or temporary basis depending on the size of the school and the jobs which need to be done.
Central Office Staff
Central Office staff are required to run any business and Education is no different. Some positions central office staff provide are payroll, accounting and human resources. Staff employed in these areas can be appointed generally full time, part time or on contracts. Working conditions in a Central Office location can vary but within the government they are generally fairly flexible.
Any staff working directly with children will need to have a police check done before taking up any appointment within a school.
