The education requirement in CAD operator jobs is usually a bachelor's degree in any course, although, disciplines like architecture, computer science, civil engineering, electronic or electrical engineering are most useful. CAD operators must also have had several years of on-the-job training as well as some form of certification or license.

CAD operators must know how to use computer programs and use CAD softwares. CAD operators must also know how to read blueprints, perform computations of dimensions, analyse and solve various problems.

CAD operators must have good communication and interpersonal skills since they often need to interact with co-workers and clients. Furthermore, CAD operators must be able to work independently or with teams.
