The engineering managers' area of expertise is in setting up, analyzing, leading, and maintaining order and control of engineering procedures and projects. All types of engineers have a good chance of making it to this top position, as long as they have obtained sufficient knowledge, skills, and competencies that come only from years of practicing their profession. The annual pay range for engineering managers can go as low as Au$50,000 and as high as Au$250,000. Aside from experience and skills, the industry that an engineering manager works in is a major factor to be considered in determining salary.

Job description

Contrary to common belief that all managers are confined to desk jobs, preferably in a corner office, engineering managers do site visits to oversee the work being done. A regular day in the life of an engineering manager includes the following activities:

  • Taking charge in planning and creating engineering techniques and courses of action
  • Making sure that all engineering activities comply with health and safety regulations, quality control benchmarks, and project timetables
  • Explaining blueprints and project prerequisites and recommending effective and efficient ways to get the desired results
  • Networking with professionals in other fields, such as in marketing and research, for advances in engineering
  • Managing resources, such as time, budget, and people
  • Organizing engineering activities and assets to maximize their potential
  • Participating in R&D undertakings

Qualifications

Although a bachelor degree in the relevant field of engineering may be adequate, higher studies can prove to be a competitive advantage. In the same way, a minimum of 5 years working experience as engineer can give you an edge over other candidates. However, there are cases where related engineering experience is mandatory on top of the prescribed criteria.
