Mechanical Design Jobs

The line between mechanical design engineering and mechanical engineering is very thin. Even companies sometimes refer to the two occupations interchangeably. Unlike mechanical engineers, who work on mechanical systems and facilities from the early stages of development up to operations, mechanical design engineers concentrate more on the conceptualization stage. Mechanical design engineering jobs involve not only planning the details of the design. This profession requires that mechanical design engineers are able to study the viability of the design project before pushing through with it.

Although the job opportunities in this line of work are mostly full-time, some companies hire mechanical design engineers as consultants on part-time and contract bases. Companies with a demand for this type of job are mostly within the manufacturing, processing, and materials handling industries, as well as in other businesses where mechanical engineers thrive. However, mechanical design engineering jobs can also be found in companies specializing in consultancy and design services, construction, and freight.

The average annual income of a mechanical design engineer may start at Au$50,000 and go as high as Au$200,000. The number of years of relevant work experience, skills level, and the type of industry are factors affecting their salary rates.

Although many mechanical design engineering jobs share similar characteristics with those in mechanical engineering, it is the former which takes care of the following functions more often than not:
