Too many accounting jobs not enough accountants

19 December 2007

Data from the Federal Department of Education, Science and Training shows that there are now four accounting job vacancies for every one graduate.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA) believes that firms will need to not only increase their starting salaries for first year grad students if they are to entice more students into the field of accounting but also target young people in regional areas of Australia to boost numbers.

In the meantime, the shortfall in accountants will no doubt be taken up by overseas jobseekers.
