Australian Prime Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd, has announced a new health scheme worth an estimated $87 million to encourage nurses back into the profession.
This follows on the back of Monday's announcement that the government would make $150 million available to clear elective surgery waiting lists.
There are some 30,000 qualified nurses currently not employed in the health sector.
The scheme will see nurses rewarded with cash bonuses of $6,000 should they return to the health workforce.
Speaking at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Mr Rudd said, "We believe we can add an additional 9,250 nurses by 2010,"
"That gets us halfway towards dealing with the projected shortfall in nurse supply."
