Skilled workers in demand

17 January 2008

Australia's skilled workers are set for a financial bonanza in 2008 with many employers sure to be bumping up wages for their staff as the competition increases from rivals to recruit staff.

It is widely acknowledged that the current Australian jobs market is tight and the battle to recruit staff, in today's financial climate of rising interest rates and ridiculously high petrol prices will result in a wages boom being just one incentive to not only recruit new staff but to also maintain existing staff numbers..

ANZ's chief economist Saul Eslake, said in the bank's monthly job ads survey that, "With skill shortages persisting, employers could be tempted to bid wages up in order to compete with one another to attract the little skilled labour that is available,".

The banks monthly survey found that jobs advertised in major metropolitan newspapers and on the internet grew by 7.1 per cent last month, with an average of 274,653 jobs advertised during each week in December.
