The Rudd government continues to change the face of workplace reform, moving from calls for better professional training to now announcing the implementation of new dismissal rules. The new rules will require businesses to give a series of formal warnings before being able to terminate the employment of unwanted employees.
The government will be taking suggestions from a small-business advisory group on how to implement the changes, stressing their concern that the process be simplified as much as possible. With hopes to develop a fair dismissal code, the government intends the reforms to make for more efficient processing of unfair dismissal claims, and avoid companies needing to reinstate hostile staff.
Changes are set to continue, as next on the Rudd government's hit list is the current exemption of unfair dismissal claims for businesses with less than 100 employees.
These changes are likely to keep the job market saturated with unfilled positions, keeping the balance of power in the hands of job seekers and employees searching for bigger salaries and better positions.
