Unions call for small businesses to be part of dismissal reforms

27 February 2008

The Australian Council of Trade Unions has responded to suggestions by the Rudd government that small businesses may retain special privileges in regard to unfair dismissal routines with calls for universal treatment of job providers.

Small Business Minister Craig Emerson will be meeting with major union representatives tomorrow to discuss concerns with the government's proposed fair dismissal code.

Union representatives want small businesses to be required to give a series of formal warnings and provide extra training for underperforming employees before terminating their employment.
