Don't stress on the job hunt!
28 February 2008
Looking for a job can seem like a lot of pressure, but the current Australian job market is highly in your favour.
The unemployment rate is near equal to the amount of positions available right now, so forget the stress and focus on how to get what you want.
- Decide how much of a change you want
Many people keep changing to the same kind of job just because they feel they are tired of where they are working rather than what they are doing. If you've been moving between accounting jobs, maybe you should try to find work in the wider area of banking and finance jobs. Small changes of work types like this could see you staying in a position for longer, and far happier than if you'd stayed in exactly the same field. - Decide on what salary and benefits you deserve
People who know what they want will seem more confident in interviews and make the best possible impression on potential employers. If you're seeking an executive job, it will be expected that you'll be asking an executive salary, just as someone after legal jobs will want an appropriate legal industry salary. If you're unsure how to work out a good salary range for you, you could use a salary calculator to help. - Keep at it!
Giving up hope of a career change just because the perfect job for you isn't available now is a terrible excuse to stop putting in the effort to find a better job. Perseverance is the key to success in any endeavour, and on an adventure like a job search, the rewards for sticking it out could be boundless.
Remember, the current job market is saturated with positions, so don't just limit yourself to a narrow field if you could see yourself in a variety of different roles. Motivated workers are in high-demand from employers, making it merely a matter of time until you are in the career of your dreams.
