Jobs to go as Mitsubishi announce closure

5 February 2008

Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi will close its Australian assembly plant in the southern suburbs of Adelaide by the end of March.

The closure will affect 960 workers who will lose the jobs, many of who have spent the past 20 years working for Mitsubishi.

Mitsubishi has been producing cars in Adelaide since the 1980s but has failed to make an impact on the local car market despite the1985 Magna model being named Australia's car of the year.

The local market will now have only three car manufacturers in Ford, Holden and Toyota.
