Getting the best jobs

14 April 2008

Jobs you'd like to stay in for the long term don't come along all the time, so when you see a position you think you'd love become available, you need to make sure you are the most likely candidate to be chosen. Most people find they can manage to be hired for some kind of employment in times of economic growth, but when you want jobs that are more than just a pay check, you must rise to the challenge and fight for what you want.

Improve your image in the search for jobs

There is an abundance of information on how more employers are utilising the Internet, and specifically search engines and social networking sites, to find out more about applicants for jobs. Regardless of the ethical or legal problems with this, you'd be best to accept the reality of it and take steps to improve the image of yourself that is publicly available.

If you have the resources, you may wish to spend some money having a website professionally designed for you with your resume on it. You may also wish to look into improving the likelihood of it being listed in search results for your name. An easier way to improve your image is to manage your personal networking profiles carefully, avoiding anything that could give you an unprofessional image. Pictures should be especially thought out, as people can be far too quick to make judgements from unfortunate photos.

Learn more about how the industry of jobs and recruitment works

There are training courses available that can teach you how to optimise your prospects for jobs, and by learning more about the job search industry through this method you should increase the likelihood of getting your dream job. There aren't special tricks that will magically get you what you want, but tested and professional advice is extremely valuable if you've mostly been searching with what you've learnt from your parents and friends.

Research recruitment agencies

If you are interested in signing up with a recruitment agency, then you should do some research on a few first to find out which specialises in your preferred industry. Not all recruitment agencies are best for all kinds of jobs, as some focus on specific industries or else have arrangements with government departments that make them more likely to find you government work.

Temp work can sometimes be a path to a permanent position, so don't automatically discount it. If you've found yourself unable to get the kind of job you want in a permanent manner due to a lack of experience in the area, then temping may provide the opportunity you';ve been looking for to prove your ability in that field.

You mustn't forget to keep in constant contact with a recruitment agency, as they will work better for those who show enthusiasm. Don't be a pest, but understand that you need to keep on the agency's back about getting you work. It would be nice if you could just let them find you work, but they represent many individuals and will do the best for the ones that make the most noise.

Regardless of what your ideal job may be, you will need to work hard to ensure you get it. Keep motivated and work on presenting the best image you can to potential employers, and you should have a much better chance of getting the best jobs.
