Jobs in retail may be starting to reduce in demand as top end department store, David Jones, has reduced the hours of some of their 10,000 staff to compensate to falling sales for big screen televisions.
This is not necessarily a sign of increased unemployment to come, however, as this strategy has been employed to avoid the need to lay off workers, and many companies will regularly do this when they experience a downturn.
If you're looking for jobs in retail, this may suggest a need to change the stores that you have been targeting to employ you. A slowdown in luxury items like big screen televisions could remain restricted to non-essential goods. Jobs in grocery stores may not become limited for quite some time, if at all, so if it's stability you most desire at this period in time, then those retail jobs may be worth considering. Keep in mind that you will need to become well established before you can be assured of reliable hours, though.
