Researching your dream jobs

17 June 2008

When hunting for new jobs, you need to do some research. If you're changing jobs completely (for example, changing industries), then you need to do some research.

You can conduct your research by researching online and by contacting various companies in the industry by phone. If you know enough about the jobs you're after, you can be a little more aggressive in your tactic and ask outright if there are any vacancies available.

By conducting research, you will become more knowledgeable about your chosen industry and companies. This will give you an edge when it comes to creating the cover letter, modifying your resume, and answering questions in the interview. Knowledge is power - don't be afraid to make use of it when it comes to getting your dream jobs.

Some information you can research includes:

  • Where is the company located?
  • Would you have to relocate for this job?
  • Which companies are the big names in this industry?
  • Where will you find these types of jobs? Only in large corporations or in small businesses?
  • Are formal qualifications needed to do this job?
  • Will you have to complete any specific training before going into this industry?
  • Are there related jobs that may be facing skills shortages? You can take advantage of these and work your way up.
  • What would be the travel time involved?
  • What is the average salary?
  • Are you willing to take a pay cut if you change industries?
