Handling social networking

4 June 2008

Online social networking has become an important part of searching for jobs, but not always in a positive way for job seekers. Many employers have admitted to looking up potential employees with Google or on Facebook and other social networks in order to get a better idea of what the candidate is like. These kind of tactics may not be fair on those you keep their social and professional lives separate, but that does not mean it isn't sensible to alter your online reputation when searching for jobs.

Before you begin applying for jobs, you should probably clean up your profiles on social networks, or else make them more private. Make sure any photo you put up is tasteful and possibly professional, and ask your friends to do the same for any pictures of you that they put up. In terms of improving what Google searches will bring up for your name, there are now companies dedicated to making the online presence of individual's as tasteful as possible. You should be sure not to come off as work-obsessed, however, as some employers look for candidates who are fun in order to improve office morale.
