Perioperative Jobs
Perioperative jobs, another category of nursing jobs, are quite available these days, given the importance of perioperative care in hospitals, or, the care given to patients immediately before, during and after surgery.
Most perioperative jobs are nursing jobs, although there are some jobs requiring planning and administrative work as well.
Below are some usual perioperative jobs:
- Perioperative nurse - This perioperative job requires a wide range of responsibilities. A perioperative nurse basically plans and supervises nursing care for patients. Perioperative nurses also have the power to delegate tasks.
Perioperative jobs for nurses are further specialized as follows:
- Circulating nurse - He/she manages nursing care of patients in the operating room. Perioperative jobs like this also require proper coordination with surgeons and hospital personnel involved with surgical procedures. This also requires close assessment of the patient's condition before, during and after surgery.
- Scrub nurse - Perioperative jobs for a scrub nurse simply require him/her to assist the surgeon in the operating room. He/she hands surgical instruments or articles to the surgeon.
- Recovery nurse - This is one of the perioperative jobs highly available in the market. The recovery nurse helps the patient recover from surgery, especially from anesthesia.
- Patient educator - This is arguably the most human aspect in perioperative jobs. The patient educator helps the patient and the family by giving them information to enable proper decisionmaking in terms of treatment.
- Surgical technologist - Perioperative jobs like this do not call for nursing. A surgical technologist assists the surgeon, usually through the preparation of surgical instruments.
- Operating room director - This is the business side in perioperative jobs. The director plans the budget and logistics for the operating room. Most directors are registered nurses.
- Director or perioperative services - Among the perioperative jobs, this requires the overall planning, management and administration of the perioperative department.
To do perioperative jobs, one has to get a bachelor's degree in nursing and to be a registered nurse. Similar to other nursing jobs, compensation for perioperative jobs depends on qualifications, skill level, experience and location.
