Radiology Jobs

The medical field that is associated with the use of medical imaging technology to treat diseases or diagnose conditions is called radiology. Radiology may be further classified into several subdivisions that differ in terms of the technology used for imaging or the procedure used for treatment. The different imaging technologies used in radiology include x-ray, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computed tomography scanning (CT scan), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Radiology may also be divided into diagnostic radiology, which is the image interpretation of images of the body, and therapeutic radiology, which is the radiation utilization for the therapy of diseases.

The different radiology jobs include radiologists, radiologic technologists, and radiation therapists. The three radiology jobs vary in terms of educational attainment and work description. Radiologists must be experts when it comes to operating radiology equipment such as x-ray machines, fluoroscopes, ultrasound machines, CT scanners, and MRI scanners. In addition to this, they also have to be accurate and precise in interpreting the radiology images provided by the mentioned equipment.

In order to pursue a career as radiologists, aspiring applicants must first complete a 6-year medical degree, a 2-year hospital residency, and a 4-year radiology training. Some hospitals and medical institutions prefer applicants with a degree in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and a fellowship in The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR).

Radiologic technologists assist doctors in treating diseases or providing diagnoses by generating medical images through CT scans, MRI, x-rays, fluoroscopy, or ultrasounds. The usual requirements for radiologic technologist positions include a high school diploma, radiology training, and equipment expertise.

Radiation therapists, as the name suggests, are those who perform radiation therapy to help treat patients who are suffering from diseases such as cancer. Radiation therapy involves the destruction of abnormal cells that cause the disease of the patients. To be a radiation therapist, applicants must complete an accredited radiation therapy education program and must acquire a radiation therapy certification.

Salary-wise, radiologists earn more than technologists and therapists and they continue to earn more as they progress in expertise and gain in experience.
