A Nursing job can be quite a rewarding career job for those who like to care for people. There are two different types of nurses in Australia, registered nurses and enrolled nurses. A Registered nurse must complete a 3-year University course and an enrolled nurse must complete a 1-year vocational course. Because Nurses are employed in the health care system they are reliant on Government funding for employment opportunities. There are endless nursing opportunities available to qualified nurses in Australia and job opportunities can range from working in a hospital, working in mental health or working in drug and alcohol counselling programs.

Salaries for Registered Nurses is dependent on experience within the industry but Nurses salaries can start at $30,000 per annum and some can earn up to $75,000 per annum.

If you're interested in becoming a nurse then you must be a caring individual, as you will often be dealing with sick adults or children. You must also be prepared to do shift work and punctuality is a requirement of the profession.

Qualified Nurses looking for an overseas job have very good opportunities because Australian Nurses are in great demand overseas. For those looking to take a working holiday, they should have little problems in finding a suitable nursing position overseas. With the Australian population aging, demands for nurses in Australia will only grow so there should be an even bigger demand for qualified nurses in Australia.

Working hours for nurses can vary greatly depending on where employment is obtained. Those interested in nursing must be prepared to work different shifts and that is usually a job requirement that comes with most forms of nursing. This can often be an advantage to people not interested in working a typical 9 to 5 job. It is also possible to gain part time employment within the industry for those who are planning a family or just don't want full time employment. The State Governments are the major employers of Nurses throughout Australia and because of this they are employed under reasonably good working conditions and have generous leave entitlements. This can include paid Sick Leave, Annual Leave, Long Service Leave, Compassionate Leave and Paid Maternity Leave.

Those nurses applying to work in privately run hospitals will more than likely negotiate their own working conditions and wages relevant to their experience. There is usually more opportunities to make more money in the private sector but you will have to weigh up the security of working for the Government.

There are many opportunities for nursing employment in rural areas, as there is a severe shortage of qualified nurses.

Each State or Territory in Australia has it's own nurse regulatory authority which has it's own resister list of Nurses. It is also a good idea to put your name down with a nursing agency within your state that will notify you of opportunities for employment. Nursing is a well-respected profession in Australia and the pay scale for qualified Nurses supports that. It is a career that will be rewarding and can provide Nurses with a secure long-term job.
