Becoming a Police Officer can be a very rewarding career choice for people who are honest and enjoy helping people during hard times. People can apply to become Police Officers either with the State Police or the Federal Police of Australia.

Personal requirements

  • Must be a citizen of Australia or a permanent resident
  • Be able to analyze and solve problems.
  • Must be honest and reliable
  • Must be able to tolerate people from different backgrounds and cultures
  • Must be physically fit
  • Have an acceptable driving/criminal record
  • Has to be able to satisfy medical requirements

Tasks which Police Officers may perform

  • Clerical Duties
  • May have to man a random breath testing station to detect people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • May have to guard prisoners
  • They will be required to secure crime and accident scenes and gather evidence for analysis
  • Be required to assist distraught and search for missing people
  • May be required to attend sporting events and concerts and control crowds where necessary
  • May have to direct traffic and re route traffic at times when traffic lights aren't working
  • Be required to detain suspects and question them about their activities
  • Will be required to issue traffic infringement notices for traffic offences.

There are a host of other duties required to become a police officer so you will get to learn a vast array of different skills relating to the position. Once a job seeker has become a police officer and has experience at being a police officer then it's possible to go into specialist fields such as criminal investigation, prosecutions, dog handling or mounted police.

Police officers are required to do shift work, work weekends and public holidays as policing of the country never stops at any time.

Federal Police Jobs are different than State Police forces in that their priority is now focused on International Drug Trafficking, People Smuggling and Anti Terrorism.
