Retailing has been one of the most popular forms of businesses today, since it offers a flexible option that can be utilized even by small-scale entrepreneurs. In retailing, an entrepreneur purchases the products or goods that he intends to sell from a bigger business source, often a manufacturer, wholesaler, or an importer. He then sells these products in retail or smaller quantities in his own business space or establishment.
This business option has also proven to be advantageous for small-scale entrepreneurs since it is easier to manage, and expansion can be done gradually. It also has also produced an advantage for the working class, since many large retail stores now offer several career opportunities such as Shop Assistant jobs, Retail Sales jobs, Store Manager jobs, and Merchandising jobs.
Shop Assistants are in charge of providing assistance to customers, by attending to their questions, inquiries, and suggestions. They are placed in the front line of the establishment's service policies, and they therefore mirror whether the business provides quality service. Customers usually take note of the attitude and disposition of shop assistants aside from the quality of the actual product or service. In view of this, Shop Assistants are trained to respond to a customer's concern in a friendly, respectful, and polite manner.
Shop Assistants are also tasked to implement the sales policies and provisions set by the establishment owner, and inform the customers about them if necessary. They also ensure that there are enough stocks put on display shelves, putting older stocks in front to avoid product spoilage. Shop assistants are also expected to keep the store clean and orderly, especially the receiving area and the store counter.
Working closely and similarly with Shop Assistants, Retail Sales Personnel are in charge of helping customers locate the product that they want or are searching for, and arousing interest in buyers to purchase the store's products. They are also responsible for providing accurate descriptions of the store's products or show customers how they are used if necessary; inform buyers about options such as available colors, designs, or models; and put customer purchases in bags or boxes. In some small appliance and electronic establishments, the Retail Sales Personnel assist customers on how to operate the product and inform them about warranties and service centers.
Another career opportunity offered by retail stores is the Store Managerial post. Store Managers are in charge of the daily maintenance and management of the store's business operations. All employees of the shop are under the Store Manager. In small establishments, the Store Manager reports directly to the owner, while in most large-scale shops, the Store Manager reports to a higher authority called the District or Area Manager. The Store Manager is also sometimes referred to as the Store Director or the General Manager.
The Store Manager also assumes the human resource duties for the store, and facilitates recruitment, employee hiring, management of employee performance, training, setting workplace schedules, and payroll management. He is also held accountable for managing the store's banking activities, profit and loss, and security measures. The Store Manager also has the final word with regards to the store's customer service, and is authorized to handle disputes between employees and customers.
Aside from the Store Manager, the Merchandiser is another retail establishment employee tasked with important duties. The Merchandiser is one in charge for the promotion of all or certain products in the store. To execute this objective, the Merchandiser informs the store employees about the product and provides them with strategies on how to sell the product. They are also in charge of store duties such as placing or arranging displays and notices on the shelves for promotional purposes, assembling the fixtures of the store, ensuring that products are in orderly and attractive fashion, managing the inventory, restocking, and removing old products. The merchandiser may also be asked to suggest and evaluate provisions on store promos, special offers, and product discounts to attract more customers.
Presently, the retailing business sector continues to expand as more entrepreneurs begin to venture in small-scale businesses such as groceries, variety stores, and appliance centers. And as more retail stores open across the globe, these retail career opportunities also get better and provide the working society with competitive career options.
