They actually buy the route and work for themselves with a guaranteed income from parcels delivered within this route. Depending on the amount of work generated within the drivers area the cost of buying that route can increase or decrease. The driver is required to go to a central location to pick up the goods and deliver them throughout the day. This is appealing to a lot of people, as they don't have a boss and work for themselves.
