The transport and logistics industry is one of the vital indicators on the state of the national economy. As the economy moves forward, the product manufacture and sales increases. It is then followed by an increase in the demand for transportation and logistics to move the products from factories and warehouses to the stores for public consumption. During an economic downturn, the transport and logistics industry is one of the first to decline as the demand for products also decline.
Delivery vans, trucks and trains are utilised when moving goods by land. Product manufacturers usually outsource transport and logistics jobs to trucking and warehousing companies to focus more on the production of goods.
Aside from the delivery of goods, transport and logistics jobs include product traffic control and inventory, dispatching and load assignment. Lately, logistics has broadened to include all the aspects of the transportation process. The additional services are: 1) packing and repacking goods, 2) labeling and pricing, and 3) order management.
Presently, more and more consumers make purchases by using the Internet. As a result, transport and logistics jobs now include e-commerce, and many new jobs have been created. Opportunities for applicants with information technology skills have dramatically increased in the transport and logistics industry. IT services, such as the maintenance and retrieval of digital inventory data on the location, expiration date, and quantity of available goods have greatly improved manufacturer and consumer relations.
Transport and logistics jobs may involve working away from home for long periods. Transportation operators such as truck drivers, have to endure lengthy hours of driving, bad weather and traffic, weariness, and boredom. A driver often works without direct supervision, especially in long-distance driving. You may find this level of independence to your liking should you choose to be a transportation operator.
Warehouse laborers generally work indoors. Stock movers, clerks, dispatchers and technicians comprise the workers in a logistics facility, and are required to do a lot of physical labor.
Safety measures are very important in the transport and logistics industry. Safety training seminars are given to every employee, along with seminars on the proper use of technologically advanced equipment. Truck drivers are randomly tested for drugs and alcohol as a pre-requisite for their continuous employment.
Many jobs in the transport and logistics industry only require a high school diploma, although an increasing number of job openings require at least a collegiate background. For those seeking administrative and managerial jobs, a college education is required. An increasing number of companies though, have required some formal training from job applicants. Recent technological developments have integrated the use of computers in nearly all logistics operations such as ordering, receiving and scheduling. This has translated into numerous job opportunities for people with IT skills.
On the average, transport and logistics employee earn $20 per hour. Common job benefits include performance bonus, insurance, and vacation and sick leave. Labor unions are abundant in the industry, and membership contracts could spell a larger income for members than non-members.
