Viticulture Jobs

About Viticulture Jobs

Viticulture Jobs are available throughout the numerous vineyards of Australia, and can
either be on a full-time or part-time basis. A few viticulture jobs, such as grape picking,
can be seasonal by nature. Working conditions may vary: some jobs require working in
laboratories (viticulturalists), some in cellars (winemakers) and some in the crop field
(vineyard workers).

Working hours are more flexible and can be time consuming, especially during harvest
season. Viticulture jobs are agricultural in aspect. Grapevines require high maintenance
to ensure high quality and high production. The vineyard must have properly cultivated
and propagated soil favorable for growing grapes. Fertilisation and pest control schedules
should also be strictly followed. Constant monitoring of crop should also be done on both
off-season and harvest season. Agricultural scientists, such as crop physiologists and
agronomists, are usually employed on site to observe and maintain grape productivity and
sustainability.

Grapevines can grow on various types of soil. For every soil type, some standards must
be met. A vineyard owner must consider soil composition, water drainage, weed control
and erosion control before planting. If you're planning to apply for a viticulture job,
knowledge in the items mentioned would be an advantage.

Job Qualifications

Viticulture Jobs differ in qualification as they differ in scope. Viticulturalists and
winemakers commonly work alongside each other, and both are required to have
scientific knowledge about the winemaking process. Agricultural scientists need to have a
degree in their specific field of expertise. Vineyard workers generally have no necessary
qualifications since winery supervisors usually supply job training. A vineyard worker
may specialise in one or more areas, or be involved in both vineyard and cellar work.
Vineyard work includes, but is not limited to the following: crop maintenance, product
maintenance, wine bottling, packing and warehousing. Most vineyards will train its
workers; some would prefer previous job experience in the viticulture job one is applying
for, especially the managerial jobs such as winery supervisors and vineyard operations
overseers. Before applying for a viticulture job, you should make sure you are aware of
the terms and conditions of employment. Some wineries pay a fixed salary even if the
company collects high sales income for the season. It would be better to look for a
viticulture job that gives bonuses once you hit or exceed the company sales target for the
season.

Backpacker Opportunities

Some viticulture jobs work well for backpackers, since these jobs only require them to be
present on the vineyard for only a short period of time, usually in the summer. Grape
picking is the common job of choice, although this requires working under extremely hot
conditions and the salary is not that great. However, job availability comes in abundance
because local residents often will not take this type of job.

Viticulture jobs have salaries that greatly differ from job to job. A cellar earns
considerably less than a viticulturalist or a winemaker. It is important to ask how much
you will be earning, as some viticulture jobs will only have salary enough for you to get
by.
