Cooper jobs are viticulture jobs primarily involved in containers used in wine production. Cooper jobs cover the making, assembling, maintenance and repair of containers for both wet and dry goods such as barrels, buckets, wooden casks, tubs and vats.
Though cooper jobs may have certain specialisations, people doing cooper jobs are generally required to perform the following tasks:
-determining the size, material, and volume capacity of containers needed for specific wine production processes
-selecting the best raw materials for containers
-selecting wood for containers
-cutting, smoothening and shaping taper boards for making staves to be used for wine barrels
-assembling staves
-making staves pliable by applying steam or hot water on them
-making wooden or metal hoops for barrels or casks
-tightening staves together
-drawing the staves together through trussing machines
-cutting grooves in the staves' rims
-making up stave heads and fitting them into grooves
-smoothening stave surfaces
-repairing damages in containers
-replacing damaged staves when necessary
-checking for holes or leaks
-adding sealants
Qualifying for cooper jobs require the satisfaction of the following:
-working knowledge on wood work, carpentry, and construction of containers
-understanding of wines and wine production
-relevant work experience, training, or educational background
-knowledge of woods
-knowledge in the use of hand tools for cooper jobs
-ability to operate machines and equipment used in making containers
-ability and willingness to do manual work
-excellent hand and eye coordination
-good eyesight
-good physical health
The salary and benefits for cooper jobs, like in other viticulture jobs, are dependent on the employer or company. Salary may also depend on the region or area of employment and the worker's qualifications and experience.
